Israel Angell of Johnston commanded Rhode Island’s Second Continental Regiment for a large portion of the war. The Regiment saw service during many major battles, including Monmouth and the Battle of Rhode Island. In 1778, Rhode Island’s two Continental regiments were combined into one, the new Second Rhode Island Regiment. Angell continued to command this regiment until 1781, when the regiments were once again amalgamated into one battalion, The Rhode Island Battalion. People from Bristol served in Angell’s Regiment as long as it existed. Some enlisted directly into Angell’s Regiment. Others enlisted in Greene’s Regiment and were transferred during the 1778 amalgamation.
