The Army of Observation was created by the Rhode Island General Assembly in response to the Battles of Lexington and Concord in 1775. The army was commanded by Brigadier General Nathanael Greene and consisted of three regiments. They marched to Boston and participated in the siege of that city. They were in the Boston area at the time of the Battle of Bunker Hill, but didn’t fight in the battle. The first regiment in the Army of Observation consisted of men from Newport and Bristol Counties.
