The Bristol Train of Artillery was a subdivision of the Bristol Militia Company. It was created in 1776 by the General Assembly, as part of a wider initiative to defend Rhode Island’s coastal towns. It began as 14 men drawn from the wider company. By 1794, the Train of Artillery had become its own independent company, commanded by Samuel Wardwell. The Bristol Train of Artillery still exists as one of Rhode Island’s Historic Militias, and operates a museum at its armory on State Street.
