Christopher Greene, a distant cousin of General Nathanael Greene, commanded Rhode Island’s First Continental Regiment for a large portion of the war. The Regiment saw service during many major battles, including Monmouth and the Battle of Rhode Island. In 1778, Rhode Island’s two Continental regiments were combined into one, the new Second Rhode Island Regiment. A new First Rhode Island Regiment was raised from Rhode Island’s enslaved people. They served in the First Rhode Island until 1781 when Rhode Island’s two regiments were combined into one for a second time. Throughout the regiment’s existence, before and after the amalgamation, several of Bristol’s men served in it.
