Joseph Reynolds (1748-1818) was the second child of Joseph Reynolds and Lydia Greenwood. He was baptized in the Congregational Church. In 1771, he married Sarah Cox at St. Michael’s Anglican Church. Joseph and Sarah had seven children: William, Greenwood, Sarah, Anna, Phebe, Elizabeth, and Hannah. In 1776, Joseph became an ensign in Stephen Smith‘s Company of Bristol Militia. He was promoted to lieutenant the next year. He held this rank until at least 1781. During the 1778 Rhode Island Campaign, he was deployed with the first militia draft, serving in Viall Allen’s Company. In 1788, Joseph was promoted to major of the Bristol County Militia Regiment. In 1793, he became a justice of the Bristol County Court of Common Pleas. In 1795, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel.
