Bristol, Rhode Island in the Revolutionary War 1775-1783

Nathan Miller

Nathan Miller (1743-1790) was the second child of Nathan Miller and his wife Patience of Warren. In 1764, Nathan married Rebecca Barton. Nathan and Rebecca had two children: Nathan and Abigail. During the Revolutionary War, Nathan Sr. served as an officer in the Rhode Island Militia. Early in the war, he served as commissary for William Richmond’s Regiment. In 1777, he became colonel of the Bristol County Militia Regiment. That same year, he was the official recruiting officer in Warren. In 1778, Nathan was a Bristol County representative to the Rhode Island Council of War. In 1779, he was brigadier general of the militia from Bristol and Newport Counties, while still commanding the Bristol County Regiment. In 1780, while Nathan still served as brigadier general, Peter Church took command of the regiment. Nathan commanded the Newport and Bristol Brigade until at least 1785. In 1786, he served in the United States Congress. Nathan and Rebecca Miller’s House, built in 1789, still stands in Warren.
