Nathaniel Phillips (1749-1812) was a sea captain. In 1770, he married Mariah Easterbrooks. He was counted as a head of household in the 1774 Rhode Island Census. Nathaniel reached the rank of serjeant in the Bristol Militia Company and served under William Throope during the Rhode Island Campaign of 1778. After the war, he captained multiple voyages of slave ships. He died at sea and his body was thrown overboard off the coast of Maine. His house still stands on Thames Street in Bristol. His estate included both a pew in the Congregational Church and a half-pew in Saint Michael’s Episcopal Church.
