240 years ago today, the people of Bristol, led by the Reverend Henry Wight (a Revolutionary War veteran), gathered to celebrate the ninth anniversary of American independence. Today’s parade, beginning at 10:30 AM, continues the tradition of the oldest annual Independence Day celebration anywhere in the country.

The “Brits Attack Bristol” event this past weekend was a great success! On Saturday morning at the Herreshoff Marine Museum, The Bristol Train of Artillery, the armed schooner Lynx, and reenactors from His Majesty’s 10th Regiment of Foot “attacked” the town. Redcoats marched into the crowd to confiscate sheep from the townspeople. In the afternoon, those same redcoats marched down Thames Street, “burning houses” and harassing the populace. They made their way to Independence Park, where they were met by a force of militia (reenactors from the Kingston Reds, First and Second Rhode Island Regiments, and Gloucester Light Infantry). After a brief skirmish, the British retreated in disorder. We thank the Bristol Historical and Preservation Society and all of the event sponsors for making it possible!

On the weekend of May 17-18, a reenactment will be taking place to commemorate the Bombardment of Bristol in 1775 and the Burning of Bristol in 1778. Redcoat reenactors will march down Thames Street and skirmish with reenactors portraying the local militia as commanded by William Throope.
