Philip Drowne (born 1759) was the second child of Jonathan Drowne and Anne Durfee. He was a bricklayer by occupation. He served in multiple Rhode Island Continental Army units. In 1777, at the age of 18, Philip enlisted in Christopher Greene’s First Rhode Island Regiment. For a time, he reached the rank of serjeant. He continued his service in Greene’s Regiment after its reorganization in 1778. He was eventually reduced in rank and transferred to Angell’s Regiment. He served in this unit for the rest of its existence, eventually reattaining the rank of serjeant. In 1781, He was transferred into the new combined Rhode Island Battalion, where he served the rest of the war. Philip was five feet, six and a half inches tall. He had dark hair and a dark complexion.
