Bristol, Rhode Island in the Revolutionary War 1775-1783

Sailors

The Continental Navy was never particularly large or powerful. The British Royal Navy was one of the most powerful navies in the world. One of the ways this discrepancy was made up for was with privateers. Authorized vessels would sail out to capture British merchant ships and transports. Many Bristolians served on privateer ships during the war, trying to make their fortunes at sea instead of marching into battle on land.

Known Bristolians to serve as sailors during the war include:

Benjamin Bosworth II,  Coggeshall Butts, James DeWolf, John DeWolfSion MartindaleNelson Miller, Joseph Munro, Nathaniel Munro, Samuel Royal Paine
