Samuel Royal Paine (1757-1838) Was the second child of Stephen Paine and Mary Bailey. He was baptized in the Congregational Church. Stephen died in 1762 and Samuel was raised by his mother. Samuel lived on land he inherited from his grandmother, Priscilla. At the start of the war, he was in Providence, and enlisted in the artillery company there. During the Rhode Island Campaign of 1778, Samuel was a private soldier in William Throope‘s Company of Bristol Militia. Later, he sailed on the privateer vessel Bradford, commanded by Sion Martindale. When Martindale died in 1785, Samuel was one of the people tasked with managing his estate. He worked as a merchant and held the position of Justice of the Peace. In 1787, he married Elizabeth, or “Betsey” Torrey. Samuel and Betsey had three sons: Samuel Royal Jr., Nathaniel Terry, and Stephen.
