Bristol, Rhode Island in the Revolutionary War 1775-1783

The Crossmans et al

Luther Andrews Crossman (died 1804) was a physician from Bristol. He was a son of George and Sarah Crossman. In 1795, he married Sally Smith, a daughter of Stephen Smith, a former captain of the Bristol Militia Company. At the time of the 1800 United States census, Luther and Sally had two young children. In 1801 Luther was on a committee to purchase a piece of land on behalf of Saint Michael’s Episcopal Church. He died at sea and it took seven years for his estate to be inventoried. By that time, all that was left of his estate was: a clock, an old medical book, and an iron mortar. Luther is most likely the namesake of Luther Crossman Waldron, a child who was being taken care of by his older brother, Thomas Waldron Jr., circa 1813. In 1806, Sally Smith Crossman and her two children, John Andrews Crossman and Julia Augusta Crossman were baptized at Saint Michael’s Church.
