Archibald Crary of Newport briefly commanded the First Rhode Island Regiment before being put in command of a regiment of Rhode Island State Troops. Soldiers in this regiment fought in the defense of Bristol during the Burning of Bristol in 1778. Later that year, the regiment was deployed to Aquidneck Island for the Battle of Rhode Island.
