Bristol, Rhode Island in the Revolutionary War 1775-1783

Thomas Allen

Thomas Allen (or Allin) was an officer from Barrington. As of the 1774 Rhode Island Census, there were five black people (likely enslaved) living in the Allen household. Thomas served as captain of the Barrington Militia Company from 1775 to 1776. He then commanded a company in Archibald Crary’s Rhode Island State Regiment. His company served in defense of Bristol, and reported a loss of equipment due to the Burning of Bristol in 1778. Later in the war, Thomas Allen commanded the Bristol County Alarm Company. In 1794, he was a brigadier general, commanding the militia of Newport and Bristol Counties.
