Royal Sandford (or Sanford, 1760-1834) was the third child of Joshua and Waite Sandford. When the British captured Aquidneck Island, he was a member of the Bristol Militia Company. Royal served in the 1778 Rhode Island Campaign in a company commanded by Viall Allen. He then joined the Bristol Train of Artillery. In 1781, Royal was deployed with the militia to Newport, where he saw George Washington. After the war, he worked as a mariner. Royal was married to a woman named Rhoda, with whom he had two children: Royal and Daniel. In 1832, Royal applied for a pension for his service, receiving $67.50 per year.
