John Burt (1716-1775) was a child of John Burt of Boston. He studied at Harvard and became pastor of the First Congregational Church in Bristol in 1741. Also in 1741, he married Abigail Viall (circa 1718-1768). In 1768, he remarried to Ann Ellery (1732-1806), the fourth child of William Ellery and Elizabeth Almy. In 1774, as part of a town-wide effort, John sent a sum of one pound to support the people of Boston (that city’s port having been recently closed by the British). As of the 1774 census, there were two black people (likely enslaved) in the Burt household. Shortly after the British bombardment of Bristol in 1775, the Reverend John Burt was found dead in a farm field. After this, Ann Ellery Burt worked as a school teacher. In 1782, Scipeo (circa 1758-1821)(described as “servant of Rev. John”) married Sukey (circa 1752-1832)(described as “servant of Capt. Mark Antony DeWolf”). Scipeo and Sukey had several children, including: Cato Russell, Abraham, Sarah, Israel, Scipeo, Judeth, Welcome, and Susan. Susan was baptized by Henry Wight in 1820. As of the 1800 United States Census, there were four enslaved people living in Ann Burt’s household.
