Edward Talby

Edward Talby (or Tallby, Talbee, Tolbee, 1730-1807) was the third child of Stephen and Alice Talby. In 1751, he married Anstis (or Anstress) Waldron at the Congregational Church. Edward and Anstis had five children: Hannah, Edward, Priscilla, Rachel, and Stephen. In 1755, Edward was the second lieutenant in Daniel Bosworth’s Company in an expedition against Crown Point. The next year, he served with Daniel Wall’s Company of “Troops for Ensuing Campaign”, and the year after that, he served in Nathaniel Peck’s Company. Edward was promoted to first lieutenant in 1758, commanding Henry Babcock’s Company. In 1779, He was serving in the Alarm Company of the Bristol County Militia. Anstis died in 1796, and Edward remarried the next year to Ann “Nancy” Newman. Edward is buried in the North Burial Ground. His epitaph reads: “He distinguished himself as an able Officer & undaunted Soldier in the conquest of Canada, under Johnson, Abercrombie, & Amherst, in the Campaigns from 1755, to 1760. The remainder of his days he consecrated to the love of his Saviour: zealously espoused the doctrine of the Great Salvation, & died in full assurance of a glorious resurrection.”
