Tiverton is a town on the eastern shore of Narragansett Bay. It was founded in the late 17th century as part of Bristol County, Massachusetts. In 1746-47, it was brought into Newport County, Rhode Island. Like many other places throughout New England, Tiverton was heavily involved in the Revolutionary War.
The town served as the staging area and launching point for multiple major American attempts to recapture Aquidneck Island, and its militia constantly patrolled the shoreline to prevent British attacks.
